Waste-to-energy methods

Waste-to-energy  methods convert waste materials into usable energy, primarily in the form of electricity or heat.

Waste-to-energy technologies:

1

Incineration

This involves burning waste at high temperatures, which reduces its volume and generates steam to produce electricity. Modern incinerators are designed to minimize emissions and recover heat.

2

Anaerobic Digestion

Organic waste is broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (mostly methane) that can be used for heating or electricity generation, along with digestate, which can be used as fertilizer.

3

Gasification

Waste is subjected to high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment, converting it into syngas (a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide). This gas can be burned for energy or further processed into fuels.

5

Fermentation

Some organic materials can be fermented to produce ethanol or other biofuels, which can be used for energy.

5

Landfill Gas Recovery

Landfills produce methane as organic waste decomposes. This gas can be captured and used for electricity generation or heating.
